About

Nathan Spear.

I'm Nathan, founder of AI Handyman. We're a small, independent consulting practice for owner-operators and small businesses across the greater Portland metro area and Southwest Washington.

Before AI Handyman, I spent twenty years in enterprise IT, cloud infrastructure, and customer success at IBM, Lenovo, and Rackspace, working with everything from small businesses to large channel partners. Before that, I directly supported 18 to 20 Portland-area small businesses with IT setup, compliance, and the kind of ongoing technical questions that don't fit neatly into a support ticket.

Why this practice exists.

I didn't start AI Handyman from a clever market study. I started it because of something I noticed about myself. When AI tools started landing in earnest, I was picking them up fast, far faster than the people around me, and it took me a minute to understand why. Most people meet AI at the chat box. I have twenty years underneath it: networking, security, databases, operating systems, virtualization, cloud, storage. AI sits on top of all of that. When you understand the whole stack, a new tool isn't a mystery. You can see where it fits and what it will touch before you ever turn it on.

Everyone else was watching the same big ads, opening ChatGPT once, and quietly deciding it wasn't worth the risk of breaking something. That hesitation is the gap. The businesses that needed this most were the ones with nobody local and honest to call: a 10-person gym, a solo attorney, a family-run shop. Big firms only want enterprise contracts. Freelancers on Fiverr are hard to vet and hard to hold accountable.

That's what we're building.

I live and work in the Portland area. We won't oversell you on AI, push you toward tools we have a financial stake in, or disappear after the first project. Our goal is to be who you call when something breaks, when something new comes out, and when you're ready to take the next step.
